SCCATA Priorities

1. Membership Growth and Engagement

SCCATA’s first priority is to strengthen and grow our membership by building a united, active, and informed trapping community. We are committed to creating an organization where members feel valued, connected, and empowered to participate in protecting Alaska’s trapping heritage. Through outreach, mentorship, communication, and member-focused programs, SCCATA will work to recruit new members, retain existing members, and develop future leaders who are passionate about responsible outdoor traditions and wildlife management.

2. Trapper Education and Conservation

The Alaska Trappers Association board has chosen to move forward with a hybrid trapper education program that combines online learning with in-person, hands-on instruction. SCCATA will develop and lead the hands-on component of the program, ensuring participants receive practical field experience, ethical instruction, and real-world trapping education rooted in responsible wildlife management and conservation practices.

3. Giving Back to the Community

SCCATA believes strong communities are built through service, involvement, and support. We are committed to giving back by contributing to local events, supporting youth and families, assisting charitable causes, and partnering with organizations that share our values of outdoor heritage, education, and conservation. Through volunteerism, fundraising, scholarships, donations, and community outreach, SCCATA aims to make a positive and lasting impact both within and beyond the trapping community.

SCCATA Goals for the next 5-10 years

1. Develop a Trapper Education Curriculum in Partnership with Existing Hunter Safety Programs

SCCATA’s goal is to develop and implement a comprehensive trapper education curriculum that works alongside existing hunter safety and outdoor education programs throughout Alaska. By partnering with established organizations, instructors, and educational networks, we aim to introduce youth and new outdoorsmen to ethical trapping practices, wildlife conservation, responsible land use, and Alaska’s trapping heritage in a structured and professional format. This initiative will help strengthen public understanding of trapping, create new educational opportunities, and ensure future generations are equipped with the knowledge, skills, and respect necessary to responsibly participate in wildlife management and outdoor traditions.

2. Expand and Strengthen the SCCATA Sponsorship Program

SCCATA’s goal is to build strong, long-term partnerships with businesses, organizations, and individuals who support Alaska’s outdoor heritage and conservation efforts. By expanding our sponsorship program, we aim to create sustainable funding opportunities that allow SCCATA to grow its programs, increase public outreach, enhance events, and provide greater value to both our members and sponsors. We are committed to developing professional, mutually beneficial sponsorship opportunities that strengthen community relationships and ensure the continued success of our organization.

3. Pursue Grant Opportunities for Long-Term Financial Growth

SCCATA is committed to identifying and securing grant funding that supports education, conservation, youth development, community outreach, and organizational growth. By pursuing grant opportunities through foundations, corporations, and public funding sources, we aim to diversify revenue streams and establish greater financial stability. These efforts will help SCCATA expand programs, improve resources, and invest in initiatives that preserve trapping traditions and outdoor education for future generations.

4. Support the Development of a New Executive Director Position for ATA

SCCATA recognizes the importance of strong leadership and organizational development within the Alaska Trappers Association. One of our goals is to contribute toward the establishment and long-term support of a professional Executive Director position that can help modernize operations, strengthen statewide advocacy, improve communication, expand fundraising efforts, and increase organizational effectiveness. We believe dedicated leadership is essential to ensuring the long-term success and sustainability of Alaska’s trapping community.

5. Establish a Permanent Endowment Program for Scholarships

SCCATA’s goal is to create a lasting scholarship endowment program that provides ongoing educational opportunities for youth and young adults pursuing outdoor education, trades, conservation, wildlife management, and related fields. By building a permanent funding source, we aim to invest directly in the next generation while ensuring scholarships remain available for years to come. This program will reflect SCCATA’s commitment to education, leadership development, and preserving Alaska’s outdoor traditions.

6. Secure a Permanent Brick-and-Mortar Facility for SCCATA

SCCATA aspires to establish a permanent physical headquarters that serves as a central hub for meetings, educational programs, community events, storage, and organizational operations. A dedicated facility would provide long-term stability and create opportunities for expanded trapper education classes, youth programs, workshops, fundraising events, and public engagement. Securing a brick-and-mortar location represents an important step toward building a stronger, more sustainable future for SCCATA and the communities we serve.
